Mid Argyll Rugby Club ready to ‘tackle’ the competition thanks to The Scottish Salmon Company

The Scottish Salmon Company (SSC) has supported the Mid Argyll Rugby Football Club through a round of awards from its Community Fund.

Mid Argyll Rugby Football Club, nominated for the Community Fund by David Blair, Marine Site Manager at SSC’s Stronachuillin site, holds training sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays for girls and boys from Primary 4 through to S5. The club is run entirely by volunteers – ex-players and keen parents – and is committed to expanding and hopes to re-introduce an adult team this year.

The funds donated by The Scottish Salmon Company have helped the club purchase essential training equipment, including a tackle bag, two tackle suits, and two small rucking shields. The new equipment will ensure for safe drills during training, which will in turn enhance the sessions for the benefit of the players.

Part of SSC’s Community Charter, the Fund was established in 2017, whereby SSC staff are encouraged to be champions in their communities by nominating local groups, charities and organisations that support health and wellbeing for a funding grant of up to £250.

Craig Anderson, Chief Executive at The Scottish Salmon Company, said: “We are proud to support local groups like Mid Argyll Rugby Football Club that promote health and wellbeing within the community. The work of the volunteers and coaches is vital in helping young players develop their skills, confidence and fitness.

“The passion and commitment of all involved at the Club ensures the players are able to continue to enjoy their sport and to train to play at a competitive level.”

Lee Buckley, volunteer coach for the club, said: “The support from The Scottish Salmon Company is invaluable. We aim to provide a safe and inclusive environment where all ages and abilities are able to improve their health, wellbeing and fitness as part of a team.

“Over the last few years, we’ve increased the number of kids playing rugby in mid Argyll by 100% and we hope to continue to grow and be able to compete at higher levels.

“The donation has enabled us to buy some necessary equipment to enhance our training sessions, and help to develop the skills of all our players. We look forward to putting some of these skills into practice during our fixtures and tournaments in the coming season!”
