Race the Runway ‘laps up’ funds for Beatson Cancer Charity

Motor enthusiasts have helped to raise over £10,200 for Beatson Cancer Charity at its first full-throttle fundraising event – Race the Runway - in partnership with Edinburgh Airport.

Petrolheads from across Scotland, eager to experience the ultimate thrill, got behind the wheel of their high-powered cars on Wednesday (30 August) to descend on Edinburgh Airport to take part in a once in a lifetime chance to race at Scotland’s busiest airport.

From regular racing drivers to those who like to experience life in the fast lane, the event was packed full of 24 participants ready to hit top speeds down the new 1800m runway while raising vital funds for patients and families affected by cancer.

Putting the pedal to the metal, contestants competed against each other for the fastest lap time in order to be crowned champion. The event attracted a stunning array of supercars, including Mercedes, Porsches and Bentley’s, burning rubber on the runway as they powered through the track.

Morag Cunningham, head of fundraising for Beatson Cancer Charity, said: “The atmosphere here today has been nothing short of amazing, it’s provided an adrenaline filled day, not only for the drivers but for the spectators as well.

“We are very grateful to all those involved and for the incredible amount of money raised, every penny will go towards helping The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre and its related facilities.”

Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport, said: “Race the Runway is a fantastic event for car fans to be a part of. It gives them the chance to do something they otherwise might not have had the opportunity to do so, all while raising money for a great cause and helping others.

“It’s been great fun today for everyone here and the money raised will go towards the incredible Beatson Cancer Charity – an organisation which raises funds to combat a condition which has touched most of our lives in some shape or form.”

All funds raised from the event will help the charity provide a comprehensive range of patient and family support services including patient wellbeing and complementary therapy services and also provide specialist staff posts including nursing, radiography, physics and research based staff as well as funding enhanced medical equipment, innovative service developments and novel research projects and educational initiatives to support the 8000 new patients who attend The Beatson and its satellite locations each year.
